Are American Silver Eagles And other coins A lousy investment?
Question by kapkrusader: Are American Silver Eagles And other coins A lousy investment?
I was collecting American silver eagles just because of the silver value.Silver is silver in any country a dollar is not. But before i go much further What is the Opinions out there on my philosophy? Am i wasting money? I am not worried about it doubling in value over 10 years as much as im worried about silver dropping to 3.00 an ounce or just being a bad investment.I'd rather invest in an oz of silver for 40.00 which will be worth 40-45 in 10 years vs a stock market thats set up to keep the middle class poor (been there). Thanks

You can buy silver eagles for $ 40?? Actually that's not too bad. But considering they have 1 oz of silver in them, you are paying a 7 - 8 buck markup. I don't think silver is a great investment. And I say this as someone who has 100+ Morgan silver dollars.
Shipping, handling & mark-up is a killer on investing in physical silver. Also silver goes down, as well as up.

The 1944 Liberty Walking 1/2 dollar 1916-1947 should not be confused with the bullion coin the American silver eagle. One was actually made for use as money, the other either for collectors or speculators in the silver market. They used the liberty walking design because it is considered by most as one of America's most artistic coins. The mint mark if any is on the eagle side above right of the H in half. None are really scarce and the ones in low grades are worth their silver value, minus a percentage for the dealer. It has .36169 oz of pure silver. With silver in the $ 19.00 dollar range it is worth about $ 6.52. It was made the year that the U.S. finally started to get the upper hand on the Axis powers of World war II, and could have peen in a pay envelope of a person building a bomber.
